From the East Africa’s point of view, Star has had a very successful digital TV operation in Rwanda ever since 2006, both President, H.E.Paul Kagame and Prime Minister, Hon. Makuza attended our launching ceremony held in 2008, and sung high praise of the contribution of this investment to the digitalization of Rwanda. In December 2009, under the technical assistance of Star, Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation successfully realize its digital coverage in Nairobi and nearby towns, President of Kenya, H.E. Mwai Kibaki attended the opening ceremony and praised Star’s contribution to the digitalization of Kenya. In Tanzania and Burundi, Star also finished its digital migration in the main cities. Therefore, Star is exactly the most trustworthy strategic partner of Uganda in Digital TV industry.
Based on the principles of “consolidated plan and construction by phase”, Star will gradually build up a wireless digital TV platform based on DTT technology, which will not only contain colorful international channels, but also will incorporate all the analogue channels currently broadcasted in Uganda, therefore, Star is exactly the one which will help Uganda government to fulfill its commitment to the international community, i.e. by Year 2012, Uganda will realize digitalization and will switch off all the analogue signal national-wide. The total investment of this project will exceed 40 million U.S. dollars.
In January 2010, we realized the digital signal transmission covers Kampala, Wakiso, and Entebbe. Currently in Uganda StarTimes has more than 50,000 customers already accessing our digital TV services, who not only come from Kampala, Entebbe and Wakiso, but also Jinja and Masaka. The feedback is very positive since our mission is to provide affordable and quality digital TV services to all the Ugandan people.
